The signature 16th hole with its island green.THE PINES GOLF CLUB, DUMFRIES

A new course on reclaimed forest land requiring time to bed in. With many planted areas staked as ground under repair the narrow fairways do not threaten yet as wayward hitter often obtains relief without penalty.

The high handicapper and beginner should find this new course very helpful with its well equipped golf teaching centre. It was waterlogged when we visited but even so, had a number of holes of interest to a high handicapper. There are a number of dog legs, blind tee shots and approaches, and most greens are protected by bunkers or water. Unfortunately the bare greens and wet fairways reduced the benefit from the good shots.

Holes Of Note:

2nd - A medium length (376/324 yd) par 4 with a right hand dog leg and a blind shot over the brow of a hill to a small green below. Forest and OB along right hand side of the hole make driving the corner of the dogleg impossible.

16th - A short (139/149 yd) par 3 to a small green surrounded by water front, back and left. With forest on the right hitting the green is the only safe shot. However, stopping the ball even with an 8 iron on the rock hard green is extremely difficult!
