The sixth fairway at SalgadosSALGADOS GOLF COURSE

Essentially an Algarve links, Salgados is located above the prestigious Gale beach. Instead of the thick rough of a UK links almost every hole here has water hazards in play on most shots. This can become tiresome, especially as the rough is restricted to a first cut and so will not stop your ball getting wet.

The fairways are well cut and quite firm given they are built on salty marshland. The greens were reasonably consistent but slow compared to the other courses we played.

View from Salgados' first teeThis view from the first tee is typical of the course. The strokesaver is essential as some water hazards are invisible and this limits the use of driver and fairway woods. Okay the course is set up that way and its quite short, but even a low handicapper will lose golf balls here.

If this hasn't put you off, the high handicapper is advised to bring plenty of spare balls. Wayward shots are punished so play within yourself and play round the water unless you are very confident you have the shot.

Holes Of Note:

5th - par 5 with water on right all the way and a long approach over water.

12th - short par 3 played over water to well bunkered green.

Recommended Handicap 18
